Alas! by Glasiel
There stands the edhel tall and proud
At first, he makes her wary.
Alas!
He lingers in her thoughts-
Stern, foreboding, scary.

He watches, silently appraising-
Next, gentle words he utters.
Alas!
She cannot meet his eyes
Inside her, something flutters.

Finally she dares to look.
And, gazing, gasps in wonder!
Alas!
His gaze is not for her,
But saved for yet another.

Yet more and more he haunts her thoughts
And even more her eyes.
Alas!
Her words catch in her throat
And, lacking speech, hope dies.
