The Song of Clip the Hobbit The Song of Bird and Turtle The Eyes of the Phoenix Lover's Madness Starlight on Stone A Lesson for Maeglin Wedding Songs

Lover's Madness

I.

On brink of Spring
The songbirds sing
And flit about with eager wing.

And lovers smile
And talk awhile
And don the latest fashion style

And kiss and hug
And cuddle snug
All drunk with love, for love's a drug.

But give me no drug like lover's gladness -
Unless you've a balm for lover's sadness -
Unless you've a cure for lover's madness.

II.

In Summer sun
The fledglings run
The fruit of love with song begun.

And lovers stroll
And bare the soul
And make their hearts a living whole.

And some will sing
Or flowers bring
Or give their love a precious ring.

But give me no drug like lover's gladness -
Unless you've a balm for lover's sadness -
Unless you've a cure for lover's madness.

III.

In Autumn chill
The songbirds will
Fly south away - they've had their fill.

And lovers fight
But find delight
In making up, for love is light.

And some will bend
And some will mend
Like falling leaves a few will end.

So give me no drug like lover's gladness -
Unless you've a balm for lover's sadness -
Unless you've a cure for lover's madness.

IV.

In Winter's waste
The brave birds haste
To find a crumb that they can taste.

Without a mate
The lonely wait
And feel the chilling winds of fate.

And others fear
To tiptoe near
Too lost in pain to welcome cheer.

So give me no drug like lover's gladness -
Unless you've a balm for lover's sadness -
Unless you've a cure for lover's madness.

V.

When Spring returns
The heart will burn
To find the home for which it yearns.

And birds will rise
Against the skies
And fill the air with lullabies.

But others grim
Their heart's hope dim
Will curse the songbirds' fickle whim.

My heart has been drugged with lover's gladness.
Pray, have you a balm for lover's sadness?
Pray, have you a cure for lover's madness?
